It lays the groundwork, shows what what the "bricks" are made of, how they are organized, what structures can be built on top of them, and what life-systems can spring from them.
It all depends on energy attraction and transformation, signal-transduction/flow, and the storage and use of information.

The list of objectives in this link follow along the lines of biochemistry as a scientific foundation as they start with understanding basic structures of life (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, molecules, enzymes) and then work their way up to the actions of metabolism and signal-transduction that bring them to life.
