What exactly is a mole anyways?

Well, unfortunately, i couldn't get the assigned link to open.... so i'll just detail a my process of figuring this out, as i am a little lost still. "A Mole is an amount equal to Avogadro’s number or 6.02 × 1023. One mole of atoms is equal to 6.02 × 1023atoms." "A mole is a dimensionless name for a number, much like dozen or googol." What's a googol?
Ok, so first you take the atomic mass of one molecule, like carbon 12, and change the unit of measurement to grams (12 g). The number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon 12 is known as Avogadro's number. The number of particles is a more useful unit in chemistry than mass or weight, as reactions take place between atoms that have very different weights (for example: one oxygen atom weighs almost 16 times as much as a hydrogen atom). However, the raw numbers of atoms in a reaction are not convenient, because they are very large: one mL of water contains over 3×1022 (or 30,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) molecules. Thus, Avo's number is employed to create a standard way of measuring this figure.
Alas, it's becoming a bit clearer, but still makes my brain hurt.
